DON’T GET BURNED!
February 6th-12th was National Burn Safety
Week and Brevard County Fire Rescue would like to share some important
information regarding burns and burn safety with your family.
Burns have long been recognized
as one of the most painful and devastating injuries a person can sustain
and survive. In fact, statistics show that in the United States, a person
is either burned or scalded every 25 seconds. Tragically, children and
the elderly often suffer more severe burns at lower temperatures because
they have thinner skin.
Each year, approximately
465 children ages 0-14 die due to unintentional fire or burn related injuries.
Scald injuries are the leading cause of burn-related emergency visits and
hospitalizations, especially for children under the age of 5. Scalds are
burns from hot liquid or steam and they most commonly occur in the kitchen,
dining room, and bathroom.
One of the most common causes
of burns in the home, and thankfully one of the most easily prevented,
is scald burns from tap water that is too hot. The best way to prevent
these burns is to set your home water heater to a temperature of 120°F.
Hot tap water accounts for nearly 1 in 4 of all scald burns among children
and is associated with more deaths and hospitalizations than any other
hot liquid burns.
Follow these simple safety
tips around the house to keep your family safe from these devastating injuries:
Kitchen and Hot Food
-
Use spill-resistant mugs when
drinking hot liquids
-
When cooking, use back burners
and keep pot handles turned towards the back of the stove.
-
Place a rubber mat in front
of your stove to prevent slipping and falling.
-
Test and stir all food before
serving to make sure it is cool enough to eat.
-
If you are in a wheelchair:
When moving hot liquids, place a large, sturdy tray with a solid lip in
your lap to decrease the risk of lap burns
-
Closely supervise children when
they are in or near the kitchen.
-
Avoid using tablecloths or anything
that can pulled on and cause hot food to spill.
-
Never hold children while cooking
or carrying hot items.
Bathroom
-
Always test the bath water with
your hand before bathing children.
-
Teach children to fill the bath
tub by turning on cold water first and adding hot water to raise the temperature.
